Description
In chronic kidney disease patients, the filtration units of the kidney, the glomeruli, are damaged as a consequence of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension or auto-immune diseases. To resolve the damage, the body initiates inflammation, which causes more damage, constituting a vicious cycle, ultimately leading to kidney failure (end-stage CKD). Our lead formulation, mCura1, contains stabilized mRNA (orange in picture) encoding for anti-inflammatory protein, encapsulated with our kidney-targeting peptide (green), forming a nano-particle. In vitro test have shown that mCura1 can stop inflammation in glomular cells. By stopping the inflammation, new damage is prevented, allowing for functional recovery of the parts of kidney that are not completely destroyed. By breaking the vicious cycle, we can prevent progression to complete kidney failure, dialysis and/or kidney transplantation.
